Nurse Coach - Board Certified Eligibility
While we do our best to maintain this page, the most current information can be found at AHNCC.org
Remember, our Nurse Coach Training Program provides you with 100% of the education, contact hours, and supervision necessary to sit for this board exam, provided you meet the eligibility requirements:
- Unrestricted, current U.S. RN license
- A minimum of ADN or Diploma degree in Nursing from an accredited academic institution. (International candidates must have their Nursing degree evaluated to determine that their program is equivalent to a US Nursing degree program.)
- Active practice as an RN for a minimum of 2 years full-time or 4,000 hours part-time within the past 5 years if you have a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing.
- Active practice as an RN for a minimum of 4 years full-time or 8,000 hours part-time within the past 7 years if you have an Associate or Diploma Degree in Nursing.
- Completion of a minimum of 60 CNEs, accrued over the past 3 years, that include content consistent with the Nurse Coach Core Values and Nurse Coach Competencies. If using academic credit, it must be completed through an accredited higher education institution. A grade of “C” or higher or a grade of “pass” in a pass/fail system must be achieved. 1 quarter credit = 10 contact hours 1 semester credit = 15 contact hours***
- 60 hours coaching experience that has been mentored and/or supervised by a Certified Nurse Coach Supervisor AND Validation letter from a Certified Nurse Coach.
- Must agree to the terms contained in the Candidate’s Agreement with AHNCC and complete and sign the Application attesting to agreement.
Please keep in mind that these requirements are set by the AHNA and AHNCC, and this is not something that The Nurse Coach Collective has a say in or can modify or control.
The nurse coach board exam costs about $300-400 for the application fee, but graduates of The Nurse Coach Collective do get a discounted rate 🙂
Finally, even if you do not meet the eligibility requirements to be come a Nurse Coach – Board Certified, you can still take our program, practice as a Nurse Coach, and experience all of the benefits of this incredible specialty.
Our focus is on helping you become highly skilled and confident in your practice as a Nurse Coach. So, even if you do not, or cannot, pursue Board Certification, you’ll still experience incredible learning and growth – both personally and professionally. And you’ll still be able to call yourself a Nurse Coach (just omit the words Board Certified).

Health and Wellness Nurse Coach - Eligibility
There is no additional exam or education requirements to become a Health and Wellness Nurse Coach.
Once you’ve obtained both Nurse Coach + Holistic Nurse Board Certifications, your title automatically becomes:
Health and Wellness Nurse Coach.
NC-BC + HN-BC = HWNC-BC
What's the Difference Between Certifications?
The Nurse Coach Board Certification is specific to the skillset and modality of Nurse Coaching.
The Holistic Nurse Board Certification is more representative of your general mindset as a holistic provider – someone who takes a whole-person approach to healing.
We go into far more depth about certification during our Nurse Coach Program. You’ll have ample time to decide which path is right for you!
How Long are Contact Hours Valid For?
Your contact hours/CEs are valid for 3 years after course completion.
However, depending on the certification(s) your pursuing, the length for which your contact hours can be used to sit for the exam varies:
- You have 3 years to use your contact hours to sit for the Nurse Coach Board-Certification (NC-BC).
- You have 2 years to use your contact hours to sit for the Holistic Nurse Board-Certification (HN-BC).
We always encourage our graduates to become board certified ASAP while things are fresh!
